Current project update

The TLBPET/Hamilton REC Primary School partnership was born in 2012 after extensive dialogue.  After internal discussions, the senior management team led by the then head teacher, Mrs Johnson, drew up a list of the school’s most pressing needs.  The partnership identified the following areas of collaboration: water supply, shortage of textbooks, need to upgrade teacher skills, the development of a library/resource centre involving the installation of an electricity supply and a computer centre.

The Trustees committed to working with the school to meet these needs.  So far the partnership has succeeded in connecting the school to the main water supply and built standpipes at various points around the school including the toilets and kitchen.  A full complement of textbooks for each class was procured. The latest intervention has been the shipping of books and the commissioning of class book cupboards.  A librarian from the University of Sierra Leone is working with the teachers to promote their library skills.

The school has been proactive in using their own funds and/or influence to paint all the classrooms and obtain building materials from the village authorities.   Exam results have also been improving.

We are hoping to widen the impact of the partnership by including the village community and neighbouring schools in the development of the library/resource centre and the skills workshops for teachers.

Current Project Update

2/11/2012

We have started work!  A water supply system is being put in place to provide running water near the kitchen and toilets.  We expect this to make a tremendous difference to sanitation and health at the school.   It should be finished by the end of  November, 2012.

A Joyous Start to Christmas!

01/01/2013

Our annual carol service went off very well on December 9.  Based on the theme “Hope and Renewal”, trustees, friends and supporters gathered on a cold afternoon to sing carols, listen to seasonal Bible readings and hear a moving rendition of ‘Silent Night’ by Josephine Philips.

In a small departure from the usual, a brief retrospective of the life of Lottie Betts-Priddy was read out by Christiana Hyde on behalf of the Trustees instead of an address.  Although this was a late change caused by the bereavement of our scheduled speaker, Margarette Stevens, many old friends appreciated being reminded of Lottie’s humour, commitment and vibrancy, and those who had not known her gained some inkling of why her friends and relatives had felt so compelled to launch a charity in her memory.

The congregation was given an update of our activities during the year.  Most notably the partnership entered into with the REC Primary School in Hamilton Village where we have provided funds for the installation of a water system to promote the health and sanitary arrangements of the school.  Books to help start a library will shortly be on their way.

Father Russell and the church’s deacons and organist provided a warm welcome and we would like to thank Ms Sevia John who was our Grand Chief Receiver.  At the end of the service, the congregation moved to the Church Hall to be warmed up by mulled wine and hot mince pies.

So far we have raised over £300 from the collection and cheques sent in afterwards by individuals who could not attend.  Thank you once more for your support and we look forward to welcoming you again next year.

A final note of appreciation to Tesco, Thornton Heath for a donation of £20 and to Iceland in Norbury for five boxes of mince pies.

Big Give Challenge – Thank you

25/01/2013

We would like to thank your friends and supporters for making our first try at the Big Give Challenge a success.

We obtained £450 in pledges and £490 in on-line donations.  When gift aid is factored in we will expect to gain just over £1000.

This was  a new fund raising strategy for us and as we move forward, we will be trying to combine tried and tested strategies (Carol Service, Family Fun Day, and one-off events) with newer strategies like on-line fund raising and text giving.

Hope you all will be happy to come along with us on the journey.

Many thanks to everyone.

Patron invites Chair for Tea

29/01/2013
To start off the new year with a bang, our Patron, Dame Linda Dobbs, invited Isa Davies, Chair of Board of Trustees,  to meet with her for Tea on Tuesday 29th January. At the meeting, ID was able to inform her of the progress of the charity, briefing her on how the carol service went, the success of the Big Give Challenge, progress on the Hamilton Rural Community Primary School project and activities the charity plans to undertake this year.

It is always a delight to meet with Dame Linda.  We are indeed grateful for her continuing support and interest.

The photo shows various stationery items together with a brass school bell (its a pity our supporters will not be able to hear the clanging of the bell) she has kindly donated to the charity.  These items, together with other educational resources, will be shipped for distribution to Hamilton School and other primary schools in Sierra Leone.

Shipment on its Way!

July 2014

The educational resources donated to the charity over the past few months are about to be shipped to Sierra Leone by Robert Claire Shippers.

The consignment includes clothing comprising of:
• Girls’ blouses (long sleeves, short sleeves blue and blue and white checked, all still in original packaging)
• School skirts (black)
• P E shorts for boys (maroon and blue)
• P E school gym skirts for girls (navy blue)
• Jumpers (for the rainy season)

These items were donated to TLBPET courtesy of Jane Rowlands, through the goodwill of a school outfitter based in South London.

A variety of reading books were donated by the pupils of Brunel College, Dartford. The donated books are predominantly for primary school children but include reference books for teachers and adults to help aid learning/training. The Brunel College pupils also added filled pencil cases, a selection of games and sweets.

The shipment includes an assortment of IT equipment: desktops, monitors, printers etc. donated by a supporter of the charity, Mr Abbess Watfa. Isa Davies added an HP printer, new cartridges and several reams of white A4 paper. Our Patron, Linda Dobbs, was kind enough to add two brand new printers together with cartridges.

Through long discussions and several emails, it was agreed that TLBPET should furnish Hamilton School with individual libraries for every classroom. To facilitate this, included in the consignment are the castors, screws and all necessary equipment required for building these individual libraries. The wood will be purchased in Sierra Leone and building work should commence upon Melrose’s (our project assistant) return to Sierra Leone.

Christmas Carol Service 2013

Sunday 8th December 2013

Once again we were delighted to welcome supporters and friends to our annual Carol Service at St Alban’s the Martyr Church in South Norwood.

As usual the service was conducted by Father Russell Lawson of St Alban’s.  A mixture of supporters old and new read the lessons and the audience sang the carols,  with great enthusiasm.

Mrs Sarah Lefevre and Mrs Joy Fraser-Amosun were kind enough to act as Patrons and Ms Cecelia Thomas and Ms Blanche Riby-Williams received the offertory as Grand Chief Receivers.

Mrs Margarette Stevens gave an excellent address on the theme of progress and in closing touched on a few of  the contributions  Nelson Mandela had made to the progress of peace, reconciliation and education  – a vision shared by Lottie for Sierra Leone.

Following the service, the traditional mince pies and mulled wine (tea and coffee for the drivers) donated by Trustees were served in the church hall.  Our guests  were able to talk in more detail with Trustees about what we had accomplished over the year and what the plans for 2014 entailed.

Photos and Video to follow.

Receiving Book Donations from Brunel College

Receiving Book Donations from Brunel College
At very short notice, Isa Davies, Chair of the Board of Trustees, was invited to Brunel College assembly on Wednesday 4th December 2013 to present a prize for the best decorated box designed by tutor groups.  Each Tutor Group had been assigned the task to decorate the box in which they were placing their books.  There being 12 Tutor groups in Brunel College, the task to choose a winning box was definitely not made easy as each group had put so much effort into decorating their box.  A winner had to be chosen!  The box she selected was the one decorated by Tutor Group BR7.  (Photos can be viewed in Gallery).
The staff and students at Brunel College did a magnificent job to donate such a huge amount of books, stationery items, sweets, chocolates,  to further our work at REC primary school in Hamilton Village.  The books will be placed in the school’s first library, which will be built as part of our agreement with the school. We also propose to train some of the teachers on how to manage a library, store the books well, protecting them from insects, rodents, damp and so on, giving the children and staff the value of having and accessing a library.
